Papua’s roller-skating delegation won 18 medals at the Eastern Indonesia Roller Championship 2026 in Makassar, marking a significant competitive and organizational milestone for the province’s sports development program. The event, held at Karebosi Field from Oct. 9 to 11, brought together athletes across senior, junior and developing age categories.
Papua’s performance combined individual excellence with a team relay victory, while emerging skaters demonstrated that the province’s talent pipeline is beginning to produce results.
According to reports published by ANTARA News Papua, the medal haul reflected the work of the Papua chapter of the Indonesian Roller Sports Federation, known as Porserosi Papua, under its 2025-2029 leadership. Chairman Mika Sapan described the achievement as evidence of a more disciplined approach to organizational improvement and athlete development.
Rather than treating competition results as an isolated success, the federation views the performance as confirmation that stronger foundations, clearer planning and sustained coaching can raise Papua’s presence in Indonesia’s eastern sporting landscape.
A Stronger Foundation for Athletic Development
The senior squad produced eight medals and stood out on the track, particularly in the 1,800-meter relay. Nadila led the individual tally with five medals: gold in the relay, silver in the 1,000-meter and 500-meter events, and bronze in the 200-meter individual time trial and 5,000-meter race.
Nabila added three more medals, taking relay gold, silver in the 200-meter individual time trial and bronze in the 1,000 meters.
The relay success was especially important because it highlighted coordination, shared preparation and the ability of Papua’s athletes to perform collectively under pressure. Eight additional competitors representing Jayapura Inline Skate contributed 10 medals, including two gold, two silver and six bronze.
Farlis Putra Usulu earned silver in the 500-meter race and bronze in the relay, while Mario Pongdatu secured two bronze medals in the 5,000-meter endurance event and relay; Muhammad Ayub Khan completed the trio that delivered the relay bronze.
Investing in People, Access and Continuity
For Papua, the result carries significance beyond the medal table because competitive sport provides a practical pathway for youth development, discipline and regional representation. Sapan said Porserosi would continue providing training facilities, but stressed that financial assistance and accommodation support from its parent institutions, including the Indonesian National Sports Committee, remain essential.
He warned that progress already achieved should not be undermined by future funding constraints, a concern that is particularly relevant for athletes traveling long distances from Papua to national competitions.
Reliable support can help transform promising participation into a sustainable development system. Training access, equipment, travel, accommodation and qualified coaching all determine whether young athletes can compete consistently rather than appearing only when resources become available.
In this context, Papua’s performance in Makassar illustrates how investment in human capital can create wider benefits: athletes gain confidence and opportunity, local clubs receive visibility, and families can see a structured route for young people to pursue achievement through sport.
A Promising Pipeline for Papua’s Future
The most encouraging sign came from the early-age and novice divisions, where Dzaky Azzura Maulana, Jovita Beatrix Putri Guntara and Giandra Azka Argatsani each won bronze medals in their respective age-group categories. Their results suggest that Papua’s regeneration program is already producing competitors capable of entering the national development pathway.
With consistent mentoring and greater access to events, these young skaters could become the next generation to represent the province across Indonesia.
The 18-medal result therefore offers both recognition and a roadmap: preserve the coaching momentum, reinforce club-level participation and ensure that financial and logistical support reaches athletes at every stage. Papua’s roller-skating community has shown that regional talent can compete strongly when organization and opportunity move together.
As adapted from reporting by ANTARA News Papua, the Makassar championship is not simply a record of medals won, but a visible sign of Papua’s broader effort to build confident, capable and future-ready young people through sustained investment in sport.
